No, if you are driving to Mexico until January 2008, you do not need a passport. You'll be okay with your birth certificate and your driver's license (or other form of photo id).

Not yet. It will certainly make things easier for you if you do. It proves your ID and your citizenship. A driver's license will prove your ID, and a birth certificate will suffice for citizenship. Next year you will need a passport to get back to the US, but things are backed up at the passport offices. So if you show proof that you've applied for a passport, that may suffice. Check the news over the next few weeks--stay tuned.

Depends on how far into Mexico. In the "frontier" no. Into the interior, maybe, because some emergency may come up. If it does happen you will need a passport or proof that you have applied for one to enter when you fly back.

Why not get one and remove all doubts?

This is my help from Washington, D.C.

You only need a drivers license to re-enter from Mexico.

A birth certificate will do you no good in travel (very old school). The reason is because it's not a positive form of ID, few if anyone accepts them.
