In general they cater to tourists that they don't expect to see again. That translates into high prices and emphasis on table turnover instead of a leisurely dining experience. You can find some decent meals there but it is not really a choice for locals (except if they are showing around visiting friends and family).

All the above answers are right. It's a great place, but cruise the whole of the food court before you choose -- so many different foods, and several stands have the same thing (e.g., barbecue) so you want to compare. Choose meats from booths where that's all, or mostly, what they sell. Quincy Market has three buildings -- Quincy Market itself, with food court, and North and South Market bldgs., on either side, with mostly retails shops, but some restaurants. The most historic sit-down restaurant is Durgin-Park, in the North Market building. Family-style, traditional old New England food. Awesome roast beef (covers the whole plate), real Boston baked beans, Indian pudding. It's been in Boston for years and years (from back when Quincy Market was the wholesale meat market). Now under new management. Have not been there since the new owners, but think it's probably still good.

You can find just about any type of food there. The range is huge from chain stores like La Salsa to mom and pop outfits serving deserts, Chinese food, gyros, sea food, sandwiches, etc... 2 sit down places there, one is an Irish pub with a great onion soup made with Guinness!
