I'm creating a membership site and I'm having them install it for me and they want FTP login user name and password of my site. My question is - is this safe to do and can I change my information so they won't have access to my info?

Go ahead and give them the info. When they are done, change the password to something not easily guessed. That will be fine.

Yes you should be able to login to your hosting account and change your FTP password. Some hosting uses the same password for your FTP as your account so you may have to just change your hosting login.
They will not be able to change your password though unless it is the same as your hosting account, if they wanted to do wrong they could login to that.
If something happened to your site you'd know how to suspect. Depending on the importance of the site you may want a small contract or something saying they will not login to the site after a certain date when they should be finished with the install. Than change your password on that date.

If you purchased web software and you want the developer to install it, you have to give them your FTP password. You can change the password immediately after they are done through your web hosts control panel.

It is safe only if you want them to be able to modify the files and the contents of files on the website. For example, they will be able to modify or erase index.htm, thus rendering the website inoperable.
