If the rope is to long the head could be decapitated, that would give them an extra minute to know whats going on. what a thought

20 mins of hanging, that's cruel. It takes on average 20 mins to die from hanging if neck was not broken.
Here is some facts if YOU don't know. look at the link below
This is the ideal situation in a long drop. When the neck breaks and severs the spine, blood pressure drops down to nothing in about a second, and the subject loses consciousness. Brain death then takes several minutes to occur, and complete death can take more than 15 or 20 minutes, but the person at the end of the rope most likely can't feel or experience any of it.
In a less-than-ideal long drop, if the distance is miscalculated or some other factor misses the mark, the subject will die of decapitation (if the drop is too long) or of strangulation (if the drop is too short or the noose knot isn't in the correct position). Strangulation can take several minutes and is a far more excruciating experience. The carotid arteries in the neck, which supply blood to the brain, are compressed, and the brain swells so much it ends up plugging the top of the spinal column; the Vagal nerve is pinched, leading to something called the Vagal reflex, which stops the heart; and the lack of oxygen getting to the lungs due to compression of the trachea eventually causes loss of consciousness due to suffocation. Death then follows in the same pattern as it does when the neck breaks, with the entire process ending in anywhere from five to 20 minutes.

staying away from the whole death penalty "right / Wrong" debate for a minute... if you are going to do it, Hanging is actually one of the quickest and least painful ways. with hanging, most people do not die from slow suffocation, it is actually the snapping of the spine with the heavy knot applying pressure to the base of the neck that severs the nerves and stops blood flow to the brain. Electrocution takes much longer and the recipient is seen to convulse and scream in awareness of what is happening. Whilst gas chambers appear a solution, they too take much longer to die, with the recipient gasping for breath and struggling. Lethal injection again is a lenghty process and although the patient is drugged into a form of 'sleep' the actual application of the injections takes minutes, in which the recipient is again fully aware of what is happening. if the death Penalty is to be carried out, surely the swiftest, most humane way is preferable, which provides the recipient with a quick, minimally painful and non humiliating death. Whilst the Saddam execution may have failed on the last count, it cannot be denied that this was quicker and less painful then seeing him gasping for breath and vomiting.

On of Saddam Husain's henchmen had his head pulled off because the job was not properly done. I noted from newspaper reports that they wait for about 20 minutes to ensure the prisoner is dead so I do not think death is instantaneous but I think and hope consciousness is lost. Either way whilst admitting the political necessity for those hangings it does leave rather a nasty taste in the mouth

a good hanging execution should be instant death.
the neck should break immediately without ripping it off.
people often strangle to death because of the rope, to hang someone a rope MUST be stretched before hand so that all elasticity is lost so the victim doesn't 'bounce'. it must also be oiled to provide additional strenth to the fibres during.
Hanging is actually quite a skilled profession (or atleast it was) it took a fair amount of calculation from the victims weight, to the height of the fall to ensure a good clean snap.
EDIT - I forgot to mention that the person carrying out the execution must be well experiences in knot making, to ensure it is a good, well made, noose.

i doubt they are beheaded though im not sure, i do know however that there is an equation involving weight and the height of the victim of the hanging. and if the hanging is not done correctly then the person just strangles instead of it breaking their neck

ifeel,
The original intent was to have the noose positioned in such a way that when the 'prisoner' dropped it would break his neck - basically, instantaneous death. If you drop someone from 30 feet then beheading is a distinct possibility. I am totally against capital punishment. If necessary I would opt for the quickest and easiest death for the criminal.

Done properly, a hangman's noose will break the neck at the 3rd, 4th, or 5th cervical vertebra severing the spinal cord in the process and causing death in a few seconds.

If the drop is correctly calculated, the neck is broken and the spinal cord is severed.
Too short and the victim is slowly asphyxiated. Too long and decapitation results.
If you're advocating anything other than a properly calculated drop, you're one sick individual.
