No such thing! As long as what the musician is playing sounds good to him/her, and their emotions are what is coming out in the form of sound/music/noise, that's all that matters. That being said, there have been so many well known guitarists (and not so well known) - Django Reinhardt, Allan Holdsworth, Steve Howe, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson, Dickey Betts, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Dimebag Darrell, Eddie Van Halen, Jimi Hendrix, Alex Lifeson, Yngwie Malmsteen, Angus Young, Ritchie Blackmore, Tony Iommi, Billy Gibbons, Scotty Moore, Neil Young, Steven Stills, Danny Whitten, Ace Frehley, Jerry Cantrell, Rich Robinson, Marc Ford, Jack White, Willie Nelson, Robert Johnson, B.B. King, Bo Diddley, Son House and there are so many more. Greatest, no such thing. The guitar is one of the greatest instuments though!

Well it depends on the style. in essence, there are 3 styles. One is the more classic rock, shredding guitar; one is the more modern, insane all out guitar; and the third is a blues style guitar.
The best classic rock guitarist of all time is between Eddy Van Halen, Jimi Hendrix, and Jimmy Paige.
The best modern guitarist is with out a doubt Herman Li from Dragon force
The best Blues Guitarist is defiantly Stevie Ray Vaughn
