There is still air in the system. Jack the front end of the car up and with the engine running, slowly turn the steering wheel from stop to stop and try not to hit the stops at all, stop just before you get to them and turn back the other way. Do this until the noise goes away. It is possible to have to pull a vacuum on the system with a special reservoir cap to get it all out, but that is rare. Could also be a bad pump.

The price for the pump isn't too overpriced considering it's a Mercedes. You didn't say what year or engine size so it's hard to give you an accurate estimate. The labor does seem to be a bit on the high side. If the leak gets worse you should consider replacing the pump, and I'd advise getting an estimate from another reputable shop. Usually the labor cost depends on the experience and honesty of the shop that's doing the repair. Good luck and hope this helps.

As a Ford owner, I will agree with the noisy pumps. But as it was mentioned earlier, jack it up, and with the engine RUNNING, turn the wheel back and forth a few times. Make sure it stays full of fluid. If the system is full of air, the reservoir will look full with the engine off, but will be empty while the engine is running. It is also possible that the pump will just be noisy no matter what you do.

Ford is bad for that. After you put the pump on you needed to get the front wheels off the ground and with the engine off, turn the steering from lock to lock. Now we have to do it the hard way,you have a lot of trapped air in the system.I made a tool that works great, its easy to make, but first lift the wheels off the ground, and try turning wheel lock to lock 10 to 20 times. If it's still there email me direct.

If it makes the noise as you turn the wheel, I am not sure..
Most cars, as they age will make a noise when you turn the wheel all the way to the lock and hold it there.
If I turn the wheel all the way to the right or left, when it won't go any further I'll get a noise that sounds like a dying giraffe. lol

I know what you mean! I've owned Ford Tauruses with that same whining power steering pump noise. Why don't you just live with it (buy some ear plugs)
