All you need is a theatre that will let you use the space and advertising so that people will come see your show. If there is anything of note about you or any cast member, tell the newspaper a week before the show opens (ie if you're from that town, if anyone has done any touring productions of anything, been on any tv shows or in any films). Just get the word out about your show and get people to come see it. If you're confident that it's that good, do a preview night performance and invite family, friends, and the press (for free of course). Maybe have some food & drink available...

Good luck!

That depends. If you live near a community theatre, ask them if you can rent the space. You could do it in an assembly hall, as well. "Out of town try-outs" are the best way to see the audience responses and to find out if your play is good enough to go to a professional theatre right away, or if you need re-writes; if you choose small and inexpensive, this give you plenty of time for that kind of work.

Once you know when the space is for rent, then get flyers ready and start to sell tickets. Get your cast to put them everywhere. 16x14 posters are good to help sell your play; stores are usually amenable to putting these in their front windows.

It's a bit harder in a large city, because you're competing with "big" plays. You can go to those theatres, nonetheless, and speak to the manager, and see if you can get him or her to allow your cast to do a reading for them, and then they may let you rent the theatre.

Another first step might be to find a producer, a backer; we call them "angels" in the theatre. This person will put up the money to help you to get started.

You can try a college in your area. They often have theatre nights, and they're not always only for the students. They Y in most areas has, at least, space for doing readings and getting backers or theatre owners in to see your play.

And if you're wanting to go to NY or L.A., I recommend this book: "The Script Is Finished. Now What Do I Do? The Scriptwriter's Resource Book and Agent Guide."

Here's some info on it: "New and expanded edition of the definitive resource book for scriptwriters. For the writer whose material is ready for the marketplace, there's new information for playwrights and book writers about what scriptwriters need to do to actually sell and protect their work."

Good luck, er break a leg....

The first step is to write a script and publish it

you have a message that is why you choose the play as medium to express it. you don't mount a play for the sake of having a play. so what's your message? go make your script.
