A Grugach!! A furry little man creature, associated with faeries, the Grugach are enticed by milk left outside at night, though they often like to play pranks on those they don't like. They are curious and will investigate human dwellings but are extremely flighty and cannot usually be seen unless from peripheral vision. They are usually around 2.5-3 feet tall and appear to resemble extremely old people. They almost never stand completely upright and are usually hunkered down or squatting when not running.
They are native to Western Europe, especially Scotland and Ireland, though some have been reportedly seen here in the Americas and as far east as Siberia. There are no known reports of Grugach in Asia, Africa, or Australia.

I thought it sounded like a brownie.
From Encyclopedia Mythica:
The little hairy brownies, with their flat faces and pinhole nostrils, are not very attractive, but their happy smiles and extrovert characters makes up for that. The innocent nature of children allows them to see the brownies, but disbelieving adults will never get a glimpse of them. This however does not prevent the brownies from helping adults in countless minor ways.

It could have been an immature Chupacabra, which is furry, and playful. They were originally only seen in the SW, but perhaps they have spread. They are extremely shy, and rarely seen. They feed on domestic chickens, and other small animals.

Racoon? :-)
Mythologically speaking, gnome or goblin. Goblins were more likely to be furry.
