Constitution in simple terms means a system of government, in the UK we have what is called a liberal, democratic, system of government.

The UK constitution whilst being unwritten maybe traced back to the 13th century (Magna Carta) and has been the model on which many 'younger' constitutions have been based, including the written constitutions of the US and India.

The role of constitutional lawyers, is to represent parties in the courts of the UK , Europe and the international courts, in actions brought against state or public bodies that may have abused their power. In this sense the constitutional lawyer is a vital part of a mechanism that defends against abuse of power, without which tyranny would ensue.

We need constitutional lawyers so that EC law can be cleverly written into English law in a way that doesn't effect our system to dramatically. This takes a lot of skill, and organisation. If there were too many hi-cups, the public would begin to notice all the faults, and would be less inclined to accept the changes. Some say that they are their to protect the British people, others say they are our negotiators that ensure smooth transgression into a more united union. It really does depend on whether they are pro or anti European. Its all about negotiation.

Steve is right - there is no single document, but the thousands of laws passed and legal precedents established over the centuries together give us an informal constitution.

The United Kingdom does have a consitution but it is not a written one. As a result it is open to interpretation hence the need for windbags, oh sorry, lawyers.
