Ever heard of USA Today?

The New York Times goes nationwide with an early edition, although it might not pop up in the newsstand of, say, Glacier National Park.

The problem with a national sales plan has always been production and distribution. You might remember "The National," a nationwide sports daily in 1990 that folded. It just couldn't get the papers out in time.

Gannett is uniquely suited for the job because it owns so many papers across the country. It's easy to send the pages to the plants electronically and print them out at various points. USA Today has filled a niche, as it is mostly designed for those on the go, but there isn't much call for more than that. People want what happens around the corner.
