It's a large female common snapping turtle. Males simply don't get that big. I'd say she's up looking for somewhere to build her nest.

And yes, common snapping turtle, not alligator snapper, compare the beaks and the keeling of the carapace... not to mention the difficulty of getting a photo of an alligator snapper with it's mouth closed...

And I do agree, keep your fingers and hands away from her mouth. Chances are, she'll probably never be seen again.

Its a snapping turtle. The tail and the beak give it away. If you hold a stick in front of it and agitate it, it will snap the stick in half. I definitely wouldn't let a child play with it. They move fairly slowly, but their bite strike is lightning quick and very hard!

It's ahuge snapping turtle. usually those live at the bottom of marshes and swamps. You must live by an area that has water. Don't touch it, they are really quick and can take off a finger!
BTW, thats so cool that you got to see one up close!

WOW!! That is one big azz turtle!!
Not sure what kind - does she live near water?
The 2nd pic looks like a snapper, but the close up one makes me second guess.
My advice: Don't get too close!!
;-)
