an honest to goodness place where I could download a printer driver for a lexmark x84/x85 for linux?

Try the lexmark site. Most printers are supported already in Linux, sometimes you need to use a different version of the same make, as the protocols are similar. Just try your distro's printer setup and look for a close match, or if your printer supports postscript set it as a generic postscript printer, Linux is not as fussy as Windows with printer drivers.

If the printer isn't supported in your Linux natively, and Lexmark hasn't written any drivers for your Linux distro, try a different distro.

Try the Lexmark site, would be your best bet I feel.
