There is questionable information on this.
However there are ways to keep pets away from babies. Most dogs can not get into cribs. You can get mesh that goes over cribs to keep cats out.
You can also keep the door to the room the baby sleeps in closed. Some parents put up a screen door on the babies room so they can hear the baby, or you can use a monitor.

PETS ARE VERY IMPORTANT FOR A BABY'S healthy development! I've never heard of a baby suffocating.Recent T.V. reports are in agreement that children who are raised around animals(Live with them!) are much less likely to develop allergies and many other illnesses.
Don't forget the lessons of compassion and caring that the baby learns from the pets. (Common sense requires the supervision of young ones with pets!) Only good things can happen when kids are around animals :)

Pets and children can co-exist safely. Using common sense and keeping the pet out of the baby's room is one good idea.
NOT allowing little children and pets to be alone with one another is also a great idea-- little kids do NOT know how to act around pets and may accidentally hurt the pet.
Here are some GREAT sites about Pets and Babies -- living together

In addition -- why not talk to the Veterinarian who takes care of your pet? They will have some GREAT ideas and advice too.
ALL of the pregnant female veterinarians I know KEPT their pets after they (the Veterinarians) had their baby (babies) -- Babies and pets CAN get along -- it's up to you, the adult, to wisely supervise and take care of your pets and your babies.
Growing up with a pet and being carefully taught how to properly interact with and take care of it is a wonderful experience for a child.

I heard an old wives's tale about a cat breathing on you while you're sleeping will kill you...but it's just that, an old wives's tale. It would make sense to keep an eye on your infant when they're around your pets, and too keep the pets out of the infant's room until they're older.

You need to be very careful here, especially with undomesticated "pets."
As a rule, you don't want to let any carnivore around a baby.

I imagine if you have a pet boa I would keep it away from the baby. Otherwise, I think you're safe.

What you're talking about is an "urban legend". However, children should ALWAYS be supervised when there are animals in the house.
