I mean when you hide the files and folders on your local machine, it doesn't mean they're hidden on the network too? Then why there is such thing called 'hidden'? Can anybody explain?

Hidden attribute does have meaning to a local setup, but within network it is meaningless so networks have no provision for this.

Hidden files/folders are items not meant to be messed around with unless you know what you're doing or if you want to hide something from someone that may get on your computer. But this can easily be changed.
Control Panel > (Appearance and Themes) Folder Options
Click the View tab
In the list is an option to turn it on or off
"(Do not) Show hidden files and folders"
Now you can see your files but they are slightly less bright.

Hidden items has nothing to do with the files on network. However, if a hidden folder/file is within a shared folder they will be visible or invisible depending on the person's Folder Options settings on their computer they're using to look at your shares.

Generally folders with hidden and system files should never be shared on the network, they are hidden to protect them from damage, accidental or intentional. Anyone who shares a folder containing hidden files is asking to get their system trashed.

Files are hidden because people who don't know what their doing might unintentionally mess up their operating system. However these files still need to be accessible by other programs in order for the computer to function. People who know what their doing usually know enough about their operation system to navigate through hidden folders easily enough.

Most of the time, files are "hidden" because there is no need for the user to even know they are there... and it reduces clutter in your file manager.. I disagree with this concept, and think that it is sometimes abused... heck I even abuse it my self with programs I write.. If I need to file some info about the program on their computer, I might just make it hidden for no other reason than I just don't want them knowing about it and messing around with it... it might cause my program to malfunction if they did..
for instance, a file that keeps their preferences or settings, or a password file, things like that..
