anthropology comes from two greek words: anthropo: human or man and logos meaning knowledge. So anthropology is the study of humans: in particular the study of human cultures and cultural evolution through time. studying culture can tell us about ourselves and our history and how people will react in different situations. Certain cultural practices hold back progress: for example very hierarchical cultures or very religious cultures - these tend to stop individual and corporate progress. It si a dilemma for cultures whether they wish to change and lose part of their culture or not change and lose some chance of progress or individual freedom and success

Western (occidental) anthropology is the study of the cultures of the western hemisphere--such as the Incas, Mayas, Native Americans, Toltecs, etc. Eastern--or oriental--anthropology has to do with the cultures of Asia. This is called "Cultural anthropology." The study of people's bone structure, how they evolved, etc. is "Physical anthropology". As for village--do you mean the movie "The Village"?? If so, I thought it was a bit strange that these people could not leave the boundaries of this village and go through the woods. There was no real "monstrous creature" out there, except modern society on the other side of the woods--as the girl found out at the end.
