Yes. Without people motivated by self-fulfillment or selfish desires, many wonderful inventions would never have come to light, great works of art would may not have been created and the leadership of industry would be significantly weaker. See, the Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged.

RP a rather strange question? Something you might find interesting? There's this supposed St. Jerome that translated the Bible into Latin from the Greek and other languages. It was called the Vulgate, and for the Roman Catholic Church. He supposedly did a pretty accurate job of translating. At Christmas time you've probably gotten the cards with Peace on Earth to men of "good will". The Greeks didn't have a word for "good will". Jerome was stuck on how to transcribe this stuff. He came up with "good will". Experts claim that a more literal translation would have been, "satisfaction". It should read, Peace on Earth to men of "satisfaction". I guess your "self interested" makes some sense??
