I had to replace the power steering pump on my car and I got the pulley off with no problem with the special pulley puller tool and then I put the new pump on and I got the pulley on and all I have left is about a quarter of an inch left to put on but every bolt I use with the tool to put the pulley back on with ends of pulling back out of the shaft and the bottom of the bolt is smooth it tearing the threads off. What can I do to stop this and what is causing this? PLEASE HELP!!!!!

What's causing the problem is you are using the wrong size bolt or didn't have the right one screwed in far enough and have possibly damaged the threads to the point that no bolt will work. The problem with KIA's answer is that there is not a bolt that holds the pulley on, it is a press fit, as I'm sure you know. You are gonna have to find the right size thread tap and straighten the threads and then use the right size bolt to finish the job. I'm almost positive that pump uses a 3/8-16 UNC thread. Also check the depth of the threaded hole in the pump shaft and get one long enough to reach to the bottom

Wow..been there. The threads in the new shaft are stripped. About the only thing now is to pull the pulley and take the whole thing back. The pump was probably rebuilt and damaged when you got it. Other more difficult and unless you have a tap and die set or access to, is to drill and retap the hole for the next size up. You will also need a bottom tap to go to the end.
One other idea is to buy a Heli-coil kit, but cost is about what the pump would be.
Sorry Good Luck

The pulley is pressed on without bolts or etc. protecting it on different than friction. there's a bite that would nevertheless be on the pump itself that the puller could be waiting to snatch to pull it off... as some have pronounced, the national vehicle retailers hire those methods out... it fairly is achieved on vehicle yet demands eliminating of the fan off the water pump and eliminating of the radiator shroud. there's a screw hollow interior the pump shaft yet is fairly buried.. it fairly is actual approximately 2 threads deep interior the shaft with the exterior being what sounds like a hex head. you will in easy terms desire the screw hollow to press the recent pump pulley back on. each puller is diverse and could advise you seek for suggestion from the instructions with the puller first. as though the groove it fairly is used to pull the pulley off isn't there, you may could take a great gamble in reducing the remnants off or changing the pump.

Use the original pulley bolt to press the pulley on as you tighten it.
