Clemens is great and probably the greatest in the modern Era-followed closely by Greg Maddux and then Nolan Ryan. When you talk about the best pitchers in the history of the game I would have to say Walter Johnson. I know the award is named after Cy Young and he had 511 wins but he also has the record for the most losses. Comparing Johnson and Young:
Wins: Young 511 vs. Johnson 417
Losses: Young 316 vs. Johnson 279
ERA: Young 2.63 vs. Johnson 2.17
WHIP: Young 1.13 vs. Johnson 1.08
K's: Young 2803 vs. Johnson 3508
BB's: Young 1217 vs. Johnson 1363
Cy Young should get credit for longevity but Johnson was better in almost every area. He even had more wins per IP'd as well.
Clemens and Maddux are very close in all these area's as well... Ryan is not as close...
Wins: Clemens 348 Maddux 338 Ryan 324
Losses: Clemens 178 Maddux 206 Ryan 292
ERA: Clemens 3.10 Maddux 3.08 Ryan 3.19
WHIP: Clemens 1.17 Maddux 1.14 Ryan 1.25
K's: Clemens 4604 Maddux 3210 Ryan 5714
BB's: Clemens 1549 Maddux 954 Ryan 2795
And Ryan did not pitch in the Steroid era... Maddux and Clemens have Ryan in every number but K's and really is that important? I know, no one can advance on a K but you have a hard time turning a DP when you get a K also...
I give the edge to Johnson overall then in recent memory: Clemens by a hair over Maddux with Ryan third...

Nolan Ryan is not even close with those two, it is just his name that people know, out of that list though Cy Young is the best, his numbers will never be touched, but they played alot different back then, but for our generation the Rocket is the best

Gotta be Cy Young and he pitched in the day when pitchers threw the whole game. But the best of this era has to be roger Clemens.

Sandy Koufax :)
But of those three, Cy Young.
Nolan was a good guy with serious heat and longevity, but his win record is not that good. Roger did better with his control, but still...
No one can touch Cy, especially when you consider how many of his wins were complete games. It's unreal!
