I don't think you can actually sue them or anything, but I do feel it may be to your advantage to trawl through the Policies and Procedures regarding Privacy and Confidentially within your workplace.

Clearly to give out your number, to just anyone who asks, is unethical and incorrect. However, as it was another work colleague, I think most companies would accept that there was probably no reason not to.

Maybe you should clarify the situation and ask that you are consulted in future, or better still (and the usual method) ask them for their number, pass it onto you and then you call them back, if you want to .

It is an unethical act, but after reviewing privacy law in the state of California and on a federal level, there seems to be no law concerning giving out personal information unless it is regarding an information-collecting corporation, such as a bank.

Unless it pertained to something at work that they needed the number for then they had no right to give out your number at all. I don't think it is illegal, but definitely not looked at as an acceptable thing to do either. What ever happened to confidential?

u can go to who is ever head of whatever company u work for and explain what has happened because i do not believe that is legal, it is actually violation of your personal rights. it should only be gievn out when u approve of it. i work in a hospital and we are not aloud to give out anyones number or we are in big trouble. we have a list of our co-workers numers in our office and u cant even go in their and look up someones number(even if ur friends with them at work) without getting in trouble. u def. should address this situation.

If they gave your phone number to a colleague to call you about work related issues, it is absolutely not illegal. May be annoyin but not illegal.

It is not illegal but, I would talk to them and tell them it is your private number and to not give it out without your permission.

WEll how important of a person is this that hey gave it out to,

Unless this person like starts stalking you I'd forget about it but I would maybe complain to your supervisor if you start to get harrased with a bunch of phone calls,

AS far as you wanting to sue them over it, I don't think that you have a case!

It is wrong for them to give out your number. You should confront them about this. Let them know that this is your personnal line and not to give it out without your permission.

It's not illegal, just unethical. Change your number and don't give it anyone in your company. Then file a complaint with your HR dept.

It's not illegal - so just tell them you didn't appreciate it and to ask you next time. Better yet - let them know that if they don't already have it - it's because you don't want them to.
