hi, I'm going to be a senior in high school this fall and I have to start making my college lists and all that. I would like to study either pharmacy or dentistry in college (more interested in pharmacy). I was wondering if I want to become a pharmacist, would I have to find a college that has a pharmacy major/ program which admits students right out of high school??? I noticed Rutrgers University has a 6 year pharmacy program that admits students right out of high school. or should I study biology/ chemistry in college. and after graduating from college, then go to pharmacy school?? which one is the best and which one do most people pick? oh and last question....what are some colleges that have a descent pharmacy program/ major in the Northeast area?

It is a very good idea to try for a school that has a straight 6 or 2 + 4 program. If you go to a regular college and then try to get into pharmacy school, the competition is fierce and unless you are a great student and do a terrific job on the PCAT, you wont get in.

There are several schools that have programs where you go two years, then start at the College of Pharmacy without having to do a separate application. That is a huge advantage.

You can get a list of accredited Pharmacy schools at the website of the Association of American Colleges of Pharmacy AACP. There are links for every school. Check out all the ones that you might be interested in. It really doesnt matter at all which one you attend. They are all good. Every one of them teaches very much the same curriculum because after graduation the pharmacists have to take a license exam. So the schools all teach the same things so that all their students can pass the exam.

This is a great career, but it will take a lot of hard work. The rewards are a high paying job with great job security> And if you do not want to be a community pharmacist working at your local drug store, then there are a whole lot of other jobs that you can do in the hospital, public health and drug research sectors.

Good luck, and study that chemistry!

It is easier to get into 6 year programs than 2+4 and 4+4 programs.

Yes, at least in the U.S., there is such a position. You're head of the pharmacy department at the store level.

anybody can declare themselves as "pre-pharmacy". In order to major in PHarmacy you have to be admitted to a college of Pharmacy........which doesn't happen fresh out of high school.
