I have no idea which size of hard drive enclosure to use. my hard drive is about 4x6x1 and is an IDE. 3.5 and 2.5 seem too small, but they are really common. Maybe my HD is obsolete and they make them smaller now. IDK. Please help.

3.5 is what you want for your hard drive.

Yes, the physical dimensions of the drive are about 4", but the slot that you put the hard drive in is named after the size of the floppy drive that originally used that slot. Those floppy disks were 3.5".

5.25 enclosures would be for things like CD/DVD-ROM drives. This would also be for the old, OLD hard drives like the Quantum Bigfoot.

3.5 enclosures are for your standard desktop hard drive.

2.5 is for laptop hard drives.

I propose an exterior HD, particularly the Seagate Freeagent 500 GB or a million TB ($89 or $129) considering they use a clean format to stand upright, now not horizontally. I omit the technological awareness perceive, that's on their internet website. they have the longest assure, 5 years. I very own various, they have have been given been disaster loose for over a million 12 months. There are some little substantial factors to computer screen of, at the same time with think ofyou've have been given to be confident you properly do away with it (dismount) from the technique tray, and each so often the stress isn't readable, even though no know-how is lost. The worst i will say is I had a million fail. It had 80 gb on it, and all of it replaced into as quickly as lost. It replaced into as quickly as present day. i don't understand what got here approximately. Of path, I took it international which it on the same time because it failed. It replaced into as quickly as a Seagate Freeagent, even though none others have failed. Sorry to share that tale, which might scare you, even though i could somewhat be basic. The Freeagents are additionally quieter than the Western digital MyBook's and that they'll generate much less heat temperature.

Laptops use 2.5 inch Hard Drives, Desktops use 3.5 inch Hard Drives, if they are fairly new. 5.25 inch drives are obsolete.

Buy the 3.5 inch enclosure.

Look up the model number on the drive manufacturer's website. It will tell you if the drive's physical size.
