I'm familiar with the Crosley as well...however, by the time you built a car like a Crosley to meet all the safety standards that exist these days, it would be neither small nor lightweight.

However, maybe something could be built with 3 wheels, rather than 4, and then it could be registered as a motorcycle, which have much less stringent standards to meet, much like what was done in England after WW2. That could possibly work.

Automakers would make it if there was a market for it. They are in the business of making money. They are not forcing all these SUVs on us. I will say this though, the SUV phenomenon happened because they are trucks, which don't fall under the EPA MPG requirement that automakers are subject to. If the government made all vehicles fall under the MPG requirement we'd see a lot of smaller cars offered.

As for the Crosley, a new one would never fly because of all the new emissions and safety requirements... but let's see what happens with Smart Cars coming available in the US.

WOW. I am absolutely stunned someone even knows what a Crosley is.

Yes, I think you are aboslutely correct, we should be encouraging auto makers to build smaller, more efficient cars.

The Crosley was a prime example of how a small, lightweight car could handle most drivers everyday needs.

Maybe like the Mini Cooper, you could spur a revival?

But I am not holding my breath.

They come up on eBay every so often, I think about it every time.

I'm trying to picture a crosley with air bags, anti lock brakes, 5 mph crash proof bumpers, a catalytic converter, and no rubber fuel system parts so it would run on whatever fuel the politicians mandate this week.
it would certainly not be simple or basic like the original was and would resemble quite a few cars made today. when you throw in the money they would need for lawyers to defend themselves from the government agency's, & environmental whackos not to mention they would be sued just for making a small car if a semi smashed one & the semi didnt bounce off. it would probably have to sell in the $20'000 range thanks to people like ralph nader,
