We have at least four boys to work with (more in a pinch) and any number of girls. We were thinking of a whodunit or possibly a comedy (or both). Our school has fairly good acting talent, but we have to build the sets ourself so a simple set would be appreciated by everyone.
Thanks!

Straight play or musical? Since you said play, I'm going with that. Our town is good, but you need at least 12 boys to do the show unless people double up on roles and that doesn't always work well.

The Skin of Our Teeth by Thornton Wilder is also a good one. I believe there's 3 or 4 boys in this one as well, it's best if you read it... it's been a long time for me but I remember loving it when I saw it!

Arsenic and Old Lace is on of my favorites and though there are many men in the show, they are cameo roles that your guys may not mind doing. The two old ladies (Abby & Martha?) poison lonely old men who don't have any family thinking that they're doing them a favor, so the guys get to die :-) You do need a major extrovert who doesn't mind pretending to be a crazy person who thinks he's Teddy Roosevelt!

A Street Car Named Desire has 6 men, but two are very small parts and you may be able to coax someone into doing that.

Equus has 3 males, 4 females and 1 that can go either way :-)

All My Sons by Aurther Miller has 5 boys and 4 girls

Rumors by Neil Simon has 4 boy parts and 1 that is usually male but can be female. There are 5 females.

I hope this helps. FYI, The Skin of Our Teeth and Arsenic and Old Lace are often done by High Schools so it shouldn't be unfeasible for you to pull off. The others I really haven't seen many if any high schools do, but that doesn't mean you couldn't!

Good luck!

'The Mousetrap' is a fantastic murder mystery by Agatha Christie. There's a cast of 8- 5 men (though one, the police officer, could be cast as a woman) and 3 women. And since the whole thing takes place in the sitting room of a house, it could be done very minimally.

And honestly, given who/what you're working with, I have to discourage attempting 'Our Town.' Without any double-casting, it calls for a cast of 24- 17 men and 7 women. No matter how good your 4 guys are, I really doubt that they could pull that off. Even with double casting and having girls play some of the smaller male parts (like the Crowell brothers (who were both played by the same girl), Simon Stimson, and Professor Webb- all character who were played by women in the last production I saw) that'd still leave you needing at least 7 or 8 guys.

"You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown" is perfect. It has a small cast with 4 male parts (unless you make Snoopy a girl, which I HIGHLY suggest that you don't...) We did this musical at our school, just this past spring. It's a really small school and we had to make our sets, too. It was a modest challenge but it turned out AMAZING. It's really a great play to do because of it's small cast and simple sets.

And if you have a serious abundance of girls, I suggest adding a Woodstock to follow Snoopy. Little kids are suckers for Woodstock.

Well I really like Shakespeare and his comedies are some of the best! Why not do the Comedy of Errors or Much Ado About Nothing? My all time favorite is a Midsummer's Night Dream. If you should really look into them.

Well, if you have an unlimited amount of girls, Steel Magnolias is always a good choice( We did it and it was so much fun)...Let's see...Another play for girls is Quilters and there is this hilarious play about Nuns, I don't remember the exact name, but look it up on the internet and you'll find it(It's wonderful!) ummm...A mystery is always good...Godspell is good, let's see...It just depends on how much money is possible, and also what ya'll like. We looked on the internet for most of our plays...Grease and Beauty and the Beast are always good, but that's if you have enough boys...Just some ideas...
