So here's the deal, I've chewed tobacco for two years now and smoked ciagarettes for one year. I either smoke a pack a day or chew a tin a day. I know that isn't really a long time but I've been trying to quit for about two or three month now and nothing has worked. I tried cold turkey, and it lasted about a day. I tried slowly weening off them and it doesn't work. I can't afford the gum or any patches so that isn't really an option. There is a hospital near that is offering some sort of experiemental drug they are testing, haven't looked into it a lot yet but I know they pay you $170 and you get 8 weeks of addiction counseling (1 hour per week). I was thinking about calling up and asking about the program but I don't know if I feel like taking experimental drugs, I don't want some crappy side affect to happen to me. What do you guys think, should I do this program thing or should I try something else? Do you know any other good ways to quit?

Great! Good for you! Why not go, check it out, find out what kind of "experimental drugs" it is, do some research, check with your doctor. Either way, please pursue your goal to quit!
You'll be so glad you did, I promise!!!!!

I smoked for years, tried the gum, the patches, and I almost considered shock therapy. Nothing worked, my family and friends shunned me, my family doctor said flat out I ws going to die, (he tried too hard to scare me), and some even said they would love me no matter how bad it got.

So what made me stop?

Me.

Simple as that. Since then other ex-smokers I know have shared the same story. At some point it will get stupidly ridiculous, to where if you want to respect yourself again, you will turn against smoking. That cigarette will seem like a bad one-night stand that you thought was a torid love affair.

I can do more, enjoy more, and spend more!
Who wants to go back to smoking?
Not me.

you can't afford nic gum or patch but you can drop 5 a day for cigarettes... that's 35 a week... i don't believe the gum is that expensive...

i smoked 30 years... this july i'll be 5 years smoke free.

my successful quit began with the patch, I added gum to the mix and then the kicker... prayer. once I asked for God's help there was no going back... And it was God's help that did it. I had quit before but never lasted...

I answered another guys same question with this. My buddy and I chewed for years while playing Junior hockey and when I say we chewed I mean it. He was dipping a log every 10 days or some ridiculous thing like that. He came up with this idea and we went for it together. We both bought brand new tins of Copenhagen and opened them together and ate the chew like candy. Swallowed the whole tin. After puking for about an hour and feeling high for about 30 minutes, he gave a full log and two tins to a friend and I gave 4 tins to another guy on the team. Haven't dipped since. Going on 7 years. Good Luck

I have a colleague who went to a local hospital that was offering hypnotherapy for smoking cessation. He was skeptical at first, but he gave it a try and after ONE session he gave them up and hasn't touched them in over two years. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it for myself, but he just stopped smoking one day and he swears up and down that he only had one hypnosis session. That sounds a heck of a lot safer than experimental drugs to me. Check it out -- if you have medical coverage, your plan may cover it (my co-workers plan covered his).

My husband went to this convention where they were hypnotizing people and helping them to quit smoking. It actually worked!!! They said he would wake up in the morning and say 'I'm a non smoker" and HE DID!!!!! It's amazing what you can tell your subconscious to do!! Try to call around, It really did work for him!

First visit www.whyquit.com
That site has lots of stories and graphic pics of what tobacco does to your body.

And any crappy side effect you get from the drugs to help you quit will be better than the effects the tobacco has on you!!
