the best place to get fish is from your local fish store that only specialize in fish, they will have a better quality than any old pet store.
transporting fish is always stressful, even if it is just for a few minutes, the best way to transport fish from the store to your home is in a Styrofoam cooler.
shipping cost is usually around $35 and is only worth it if you are buying a rare fish.

Often mail order fish are higher quality. These are reputable sites I know of.
www.dandyorandas.com - uses Delta Dash so the order will arive in less than 8 hours

www.goldfishconnection.com

Yes they should arrive alive. Most goldfish are imported from China and Japan so they can survive a long time in a box on a plane. Make sure you get them acclimatized and watch closely for a few days. Its ok. That's the only way you can get a show quality or rare variety goldfish. Petstores only sell culls and scrubs. You want something nice like the pictures in the books? You will have to mail order.
Dandy Orandas is pricy but they have some real hard to find beauties. They will also send you a DVD to pick the exact fish you want. You can see them swimming in action as opposed to pictures. You can make sure they are healthy. Ask to have a scrape done for the microscope to assure fish is clean. They should. Most show fish are treated very well and are less likely to carry disease since they are more expensive. Good luck. Get something real nice. Its fun!

I'm pretty certain they'll be fine. Fish are tougher than you think! my two goldfish have been on numerous bumpy car journeys, a couple have been 10 hours long, in just a large plastic mayonnaise tub and have lived to tell the tale! Still going strong after 3 years...they may actually be invincible lol

shipping is VERY stressful on the fish, however think, of it this way:

how do they get to the store? they're shipped there. then they have to get stressed out AGAIN when you take them home. and they usually survive, right?

so really it doens't matter which you choose. I prefer stores because I can pick which exact fish I want, and make sure I'm not getting a sick one. you never know what you'll be sent. if you choose the internet make sure you look for feedback on their site, never buy fro a site with no feedback or negative feedback.

Shipping any kind of pet fish is VERY stressful for them. Many of them do not arrive alive at their destination. What a waste of lives.

Go to a pet store and get them there -- make sure they look healthy. Healthy goldfish can live for YEARS if properly cared for.

I once "rescued" a little goldfish that had been attacked by Silver Dollars. They hurt its eye and roughed him up, I took him /her to live in a nice bowl at home. Sadly, its wounds were fatal but at least it died peacefully (after 2 days-- and it WOULD come up to me and look at me when I gently scritched on the glass side of the bowl).

Its safe but you are gonna pay more money of shipping than on the fish itself.

i dont think you really should because if you have fish already and just looking for other fish the fish that you order may be sick and kill the other fish. it may be stressful as well. pluse they may not get to you alive.
