Leaving aside Tolkein (great book - LotR invented the genre) I agree with Perspihone - Zelazny's books are brimfull of fantastic invention. Chosing someone no one else has mentioned I'd probably go for Moorcock - Elric of Melnibone & the other Eternal Champion novels in particular.

One author that no one else mentioned is Stephen Donaldson who wrote two trilogys about Thomas Covenant -- The Unbeliever. Not as good as the LOTR trilogy, but very good. Robert Jordan's "Wheel of Time" Series, starts out very good, but I think loses alot of steam after book 3.

Terry Pratchett--simply none better out there.

In a 4-way tie for third: Neil Gaiman, Philip Pullman, J.K. Rowling, and J.R.R. Tolkien.

It's a tie between Piers Anthony (writer of the clever Xanth series) and Jasper Fforde (writer of the even more clever Thursday Next series).

Roger Zelazney. His Amber books are the best. Try some "grown up" fantasy. Pax - X
