Do people have affairs because they are failures in their career etc? They may think they are looking for sex, but actually aren't.

As a woman who has been hit on by many married men, the more successful a person, the more likely he (or she) will have an affair. I think it's the thrill and the opportunity is also more likely there. And no, I'm not this gorgeous thing, but I do have an F cup.

That doesn't mean those less well off don't have affairs, but I just don't see the drunk at the bar getting it on too well as compared to the automobile fix it guy, KWIM?

Interesting idea.
I think many affairs are attempts to escape from one's won life and if they were a failure that would explain why they would want to escape.
However, someone people are failures only in part of their life like their personal life and not their work or vice a versa.

I think it has nothing to do with being a failure or success. Its what you are missing at home. Lets say you miss talking to your wife, she isnt there that much mentally or physically. You meet someone start talking, one thing leads to another and bang your having your needs met and having an affair. People are looking for a number of things, ladies look for someone who pays attention, romances them. Men could be looking for the same thing.

I think that would be the opposite, they feel like they are sucessful even to the point outclassing their current relationship, therefore they look outside the marrige for and upgrade. A failure my have self-esteem issues, where as not to cheat out of fear of losing what they have or not finding anything better knowing they are already lucky to be with their current.

Selfish people are more likely to have affairs. Their own pleasure is more important than the consideration of others or any vows/promises/committments they have made.

Selfish people may be successful or unsuccessful. They come in all types and walks of life.

It has been my experience. That successful men have more affairs. They have more excuses for not being home.Like meetings and business trips. And they have more money so it is easier to spend money on the other woman without being caught.I know a lot of poor blue collar guys and a lot of successful men with their own business and every one of the successful ones I know have mistresses.

People cheat because they are selfish...i don't think this is a character trait that discriminates based on career success or failure...
