There are awesome trails in the area. Most are flat and pretty well used in the summer.
Busse Woods is an eight mile trail just east of Woodfield. Lots of water pumps, toilets, and other amenities. You do cross one major road once going around the circuit.
Poplar Woods by western Schaumburg winds around a forest preserve. The trail has some small hills. You pass some fishing lakes but not too many people.
There is the Prairie Path from Wheaton to Elgin which is also a horse trail but very scenic. You can ride 60 miles from Aurora to Wisconsin, the North Shore rail, the Chicago Lakefront (crowded but lots of fun).
I ride a road bike. If you are into serious mountain bike riding there are trail about thirty miles to the north.
There are bike shops near some of these trail. I have also found some interesting places to eat near these trails.

Poplar Creek and Busse Woods - particularly Busse Woods - have some very nice bike trails. You might stop by a Chase bank branch - many of the branches have maps of all the bike trails in Chicagoland, which they give out for free.
