Yes, I had this after I had my son, straight after the birth the midwife checked me over and stitched me up, then about an hour later my husband noticed that I was bleeding alot, the blood had soaked through the mattress on the bed and had formed a pool of blood under the bed, the midwife said I'd be o.k and they cleaned me up and moved me to the ward, after another couple of hours I started to feel really ill, worse than I had been feeling, the Dr was sent for and he said I was tachycardic, after checking me over he saw I was still bleeding alot, he then felt my stomach and said I needed to go to theatre immediately for the evacuation of a retained placenta! The procedure was done under spinal block, I was then moved back to the ward a full 8 hrs after giving birth!! The following day I felt that ill I thought I was dying!, I had to have 5 units of blood transfused! Great!! All this because the placenta wasn't checked after I gave birth to my son, if it wasn't for my husband's persistence in demanding someone take a look at me, I'd be DEAD!! and that's no lie!!

Not really, but I know they check the placenta thoroughly after delivery to make sure it's all out.....if it wasn't they would probably do a D&C, like they do when you have a miscarriage or after a c-section.....(vacuum out 'retained products of conception')

I had a piece retained after my first one. Fortunately, I passed it when she was a week old.
