just wondering what the postal services around the world did during ww2 ... let's say if I was in Moscow and wanted to send a letter to someone in Paris...(I'm talking 'civilian mail' not the 'military mail') would the letter get to Paris? If yes... how?

thanks for replies in advance!

My dad served in WWII and says mails going out of the country was impossible ... I don't remember how he told me how mail service was working but told me it was sad that mail service wasnt working very well during WWII

Only the military mails were able to get out but very slowly ... He remembers some of his friends got home and few days / weeks later their parents would receive the letters later on

Mail does get censored in war time, even by neutral countries. Civilian mail still would have been possible. Your example is a little bit difficult because the allegiances of Paris and Moscow changed during WW II. Your letter might have made it to a neutral country (Switzerland, Sweden, and Portugal come to mind) and been forwarded on. Russia and France were allied late in the war so there would have been less of a problem. Civilian mail would have had an important commercial purpose since normal trade channels were disrupted.

The mail system was alive and well during the war, although all mail took much longer to get to its destination. Think months instead of weeks. The mail would go its regular channels, but obviously due to the war, things were not running as quickly.

Hello,

Letters going from one belligerent country to another as well as to concentration camps were handled by neutral agencies like the Red Cross. Of course all mail would have been screened or censored.
