Salutations, I have a 300 gallon fish tank with a plethera of Goldfish, some of which have grown to be the size of my hand. The goldfish are very healthy and have alot of fishmeat on them. I bet I could get some mean fillets from a few of them, other than lemon and garlic, what other ingredients would bring out the exquisite taste of these tropical fish. And are they better deep fried or baked, goldfish lovers, please share your previous experiences with me, thanks, and bon appetite

I like to take the fillets and put hot sauce on them and bake it with a little olive oil so it doesnt burn.

3 ways i know of preparing fish:
1) in a pan coat with a thin layer of olive oil,a few drops of lemon juice and a splash of cooking wine. Put in the fish and
sprinkle either blackened seasoning or Emeril's fish seasoning on both side.
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.
Bake until the fish flakes.

2) Prepare a frying pan 2 bowls with bread crumbs (finely crushed) and mix the breadcrumbs with salt, pepper, paprika, garlic etc. - actually what ever seasonings you prefer and
a bowl of egg - well beaten.
drags both sides of the fillet in the first bowl of breadcrumbs, the egg bowl and then the second bowl of breadcrumbs.
Pan fry until golden brown.

3) Here is a recipe - you can add whitefish Pike and/or mullet if you chose.
cut open the goldfish ( and the mullet and the whitefish) and debone it.
grind the fish
add egg whites, onions, matzo meal, sugar, potato starch, salt and pepper.
Mix well
form it into balls or a loaf.
Refrigerate for a few hours.
Bring water To a boil
add carrots, onion, salt, pepper and sugar or splenda (you can leave the sugar salt and pepper from the items blended with the fish if you are putting it in the water). and bring it to a boil.
add the fish and bring it to a boil.
Simmer for an hour and a half
Either eat it hot or let it cool and refrigerate
eat the balls or slice the loaf
it is good with tarter sauce or white or red horseradish.
Note you may want to let the goldfish grow before you cook him.It would take a lot of 12 cent goldfish before they grow to make GEFILTE fish.

Carp are pretty good to eat,I prefer the whiter fleshed species, myself. If you really want to grow your own aquarium treats I'd suggest Tilapia as easiest to grow-out quickly,or Pacu for the best flavor. In Brazil I've eaten Pacu on many occasions and find it to be delicately flavored with a firm texture. The best recipe was a "skin-on" fillet, placed skin side down on an open grill and basted with a little lime juice just before serving.
Another possibility might be Peacock Bass(Cichla cichla) which is eaten baked with finely chopped vegetables.

Um. If you have medicated them anytime in their lives they are not safe to eat. Almost no one eats carp. They are considered a 'trash fish' like gar and such. Goldfish are in the carp family. They are not really edible fish. They are worth more in the tank alive.
You could however catch some baby catfish or blue gills and raise them to eat if you want to. Some petstores even sell channel cat and you can raise and eat those. But it'd be cheaper and faster to just go fishing or to the store if you're hungry.

They aren't tropical fish, but a friend of mine did once eat a raw koi carp fillet (he is japanese!) he claimed it was quite plain...
Batter the fish fillets with a mix of flour, egg and milk and deep fat fry until golden, serve with chips (the word is chips not french fries!)

I would clean them then season them for frying.
Good Luck
