I am trying to install Ubuntu 7.04 on my Macbook under parallels. my macbook has 2GB of RAM and a 120GB HD. it is a 2GHz. When I am installing ubuntu it installs fine until it says detecting hardware and it says something about "piix", then i freezes and wont go anymore. I want to be able to install the XGL and Beryl graphics on it.

Any suggestions???

I believe there's an alternative install CD that works better than the Live CD version. Try finding and using that instead.

Installing Linux on a Mac is virtually pointless anyways. You're already using an operating system that runs on Unix. Most of the things that can be done with Linux can be done with Mac OS X. XGL and Beryl will look like toys compared to Leopard, I'm sure. A lot of Linux software has been ported to Mac OS X, so I don't really see any benefit to using Ubuntu. I mean, yeah, it's neat and all, but you don't really get any extra function out of it.

Yeah, also, Parallels is quite buggy. I've tried it several times. It has improved, but it's still not a viable alternative to dual booting.

The mac OS X runs part of a Unix kernel, it is not the same as linux. Ubuntu is amazing with beryl and with the hardware on the mac it will fly but your asking the wrong forum, go to the ubuntu site forums.

Ubuntu 7 is a LIVE CD. try cold booting your MAC with the Linux CD inserted. This will test your hardware, if it won't boot try an older version.

Parallels is NOT bug free.
