Does it allow me to record my TV or (even better) from my cable box to my laptop? What is a tv card - are they on my computer already? How do I connect these things, S-video computer to cable box?

Any suggestions to help me record to my laptop? Do I need to just buy certain cables or is more needed? I have nero 7 ultra edition which should allow this.

It may be helpful to give you some comparisons.

The number and type of video inputs determine which sources you can use with the display.

Composite video: This input type has the lowest quality but the broadest compatibility. Any device that has video outputs will include composite video among them. Connection is made with a single 75-ohm coaxial cable between RCA jacks.

S-Video: S-Video offers better quality than composite video, and most video sources except standard VCRs now have S-Video outputs. Connection is made with a special cable and multipin sockets. Connecting is simple. It's just like connecting any other video cable.

Component video: This high-quality option is the minimum standard for connecting HDTV tuners and progressive-scan DVD players. It requires three 75-ohm coaxial cables of the same type used for composite video.

A home network solution that connects your DVR/Laptop/Desktop is probably the best configuration for doing what you seem to want to do.

Spend $150 and buy a Hauppauge WinTV External USB Tuner if you want to record TV. It also allows for S-Video capture from a camera or VCR/DVD.

Or just spend as much (or little) as you want....they make a whole line of capture devices.

Get a cheap camcorder, point it at the LCD, and record! Then use the provided cables and driver to import the video to your laptop as an AVI file.

You can get surprisingly clear results by simply videotaping an LCD screen.

And you can use the cheap camcorder for other things.

It allows you to put Windows on the TV screen.

You need a TV Capture card (PCI) to do what you want, but they can't be used in a laptop, unless you can find a PCMCIA TV Capture card.

I don't know if they exist. Google for it.

"OUT" is the key word here...so No, you can't record anything on your TV...but you can watch what's on your computer on your TV...via the OUT port of the vidcard.
