why can't we have good news on the telly/newspapers

(I know they probably wouldn't sell as many papers than the sensationalist garbage they print nowadays)

Ultimately, you already know the answer - it sells papers. The big, usually negative, stories are always on the front page...the decent news is towards the back. Just the way it is.

As Ted Koppel once pointed out, if the Queen Mary crosses the Atlantic without incident, that's not news. If the Queen Mary sinks while crossing the Atlantic, that's news.

Part of what makes the news so "negative" is that plane crashes, school shootings, lethal flu viruses and so forth are the exception to our everyday lives, not the rule. And just as important, many people do not wish to remain ignorant of these events, for they can be indirectly or directly affected by them. Also, if you watch tonight's newscast and count up how many stories are negative, how many are positive, and how many are neutral, you may find the news isn't quite as negative as we tend to assume.

Each of us is responsible for being informed on that which affects our safety, health, finances, government, and so forth, and only knowing what's going on in the world that's "good" may make us dangerously ignorant.

because ultimatly people want to hear about bad things, it sells papers and i guess makes people feel a little better knowing there lifes arent as bad as other peoples, or is this terribly cynical! Also maybe its important we hear about the bad things, tho i do think every paper and news report should have a ánd finally´moment where they tell everyone something lovely like about a cat being rescued or an old lady winning the lottery and throwing a big party for the whole village. maybe that is just local news tho!!

Dog bites man not news
Man bites dog is news
I can only suggest that in spite of what the papers say most people are kind and thoughtful so this is not news
Those who are otherwise are an exception and are news
I'd like to believe this anyhow

Because people want to hear that sort of thing. I remember some years ago a news reader tried to get the media to concentrate on good things and was ridiculed.
