The best we've ever had by far was Alec stewart. He hit some great innings, and then he kept wicket as good as anyone in the game, meaning another position was taken care of. I bet England wish he was 25 years old again. Of course, it would have been good to see him at the other end playing with Boycott. But hey, lets look to the future, and find the next best Opener. Boycott was magnificently solid. He is the archetypal Yorkshireman - knows the lot, and bugger anyone who disputes this. That being said, he has tremendous cricket acumen and a deep insight into the game that is shared by few.

Gooch was the classic opener, and it is interesting to see that Alastair Cook ( Essex) is showing similar traits, bearing in mind that Gooch is the batting coach for Essex CCC.

I look forward to the return of Trescothick - an opener with his own, unique style. Cook and Tresco will make a productive pair.

Strauss is such a bloody good fielder that it will be a shame if we cannot find a place for him, but there was no safer pair of hands at slip than Graeme Hick, but, for reasons not entreley his own fault, he did not consistently produce the needed results with the bat. One cannot use a cricketer purely on his fielding ability alone.

Cook is surely sedimented in the England side.

At The moment it would be trecothick.

Boycott was a waste of time, yes he could be there for days, but did he score? NO he was boring, and still is in his commentry!!

I would have to say it all depends on your age and expectations of cricket. Gooch was a fine Batsman who could score and make the cricket interesting in his time. Just like Tresco does now.
Strauss should definatley be dropped now, he is just so uncomfortable looking out there with Cook.

all the people saying boycott was the best opener just shows what a sorry state England have been in, the guy was the biggest plodder in history and if players played like him today cricket would be dead in the water-would you watch a guy bat for 2 days and still be on 60 or 70 ?, id much prefer trescothick and strauss at least they get on with it.

Geoff Boycott? While we could certainly do with his talent for sticking at the crease for days on end, he was hardly the greatest.

Len Hutton has to be right up there though. There wasn't anyone to touch him in his day.

Why are people saying currently it's Trescothick when he isn't actually a part of the current squad, at the minute it is Alistair Cook, most recently Marcus Trescothick.

Of all time i would say Geoffrey Boycott.
