as u must be knowing the deffinition of compound, compound is the substance made up of two or more elements.. see in water that is H2O there is 1 molecule of hydrogen & two molecules of oxygen means it has 2 elements that's why called compound

1. I'd say because if you think of the meaning of compund this is the only one that fits. Water is made of 2 elements, Oxygen and Hydrogen
