A friend of mine broke her leg (hairline fracture) right below her knee. She never had a cast, but had to stay in a brace for 2 months. She had the brace taken off a couple of weeks ago, and she's doing very well. She said her leg gets sore after a long day, but that may be from sore muscles.
You should be icing your leg to reduce the swelling and keep it elevated above your heart (laying down, of course). Ice on for 20 minutes, off for 40, and repeat. The cold packs that you put in the freezer are the easiest to use. It will help to alleviate some of the throbbing sensation, too. If you don't have pain medication, Advil will help the pain and inflammation.
I think it's a case by case scenario, but you should follow your physician's advice. You sure don't want more problems down the road. Sorry you're injured. Take care, be well.

Okay, I'm no expert but common sense would say that if you have definately got a brokeN leg and an x-ray has confirmed this, then usually the course of action (from experience) is to allow for the swelling to subside before placing the leg in a cast. Usually, a more flexible support is put on for a day or two to allow the swelling to go down.
A cast is important because it allows the bones to knit together in the proper place. Not doing this could cause problems in the furture - I know of someone whose bone was set incorrectly and needed to have surgery to re-break and re-set it. Ouch.
You should have an xray to determine where the break is - and also to rule out any need to have the leg pinned (in the event of a diffuicult break)

Umm...so your leg is broke, but you haven't seen a doctor?
No, it won't heal properly. When they put on a cast, they also set the bone to its correct position so that it will heal the right way. Otherwise, it will heal crooked or offset and you'll have problems and pain for the rest of your life.

A lot depends on what is broken and how, but if improperly treated it could lead to more complications than just a poorly healed bone. If it's down at the ankle, perhaps you could go to the emergency department at the local hospital. They will want to be paid, but not immediately, and at least you can learn your options.

while i'm no expert, i believe it depends on how badly you broke your leg. if its only a fracture but you keep pressure off your leg for several weeks you should heal properly but again it all depends. have you seen a doctor?

Broken bones need to be set or they will not heal properly. They will still heal but might be crocked.
