With complex numbers, you look at the stuff without the i and the stuff with the i separately.
In your case:
(6 + 8i) - (7 + i) distribute the negative sign ...
(6 + 8i) + (-7 - i) drop the parentheses ...
6 + 8i - 7 - i reorganize if you'd like
6 - 7 + 8i - i The i can factor out here ...
(6 - 7) + (8 - 1) i
-1 + 7i
So the answer here is -1 + 7i.
Basically, don't fear i. Just treat it like a variable most of the time, and you'll be fine. :)

(6+8i)-(7+i)= 6-7+8i-1i= -1+7i = 7i-1
but during my school days we did those things in maths not in geography - but I'm from Austria
