No.
It's a good thing too. If it was going to be me or someone's dog, it's gonna be me.

It's perfectly legal to kill an animal that is not on-lead and attacks you. Heck, you can kill a HUMAN if it attacks you! But for your own safety (since you probably wouldn't square up too well against a Pit), you should learn some safety tips for dealing with those situations. If you come upon a dog that is growling, barking, looks mean ... 1. DO NOT make eye contact. 2. Turn more sideways from the dog and keep your eyes away from his and kind of looking downward. 3. Walk (don't run) slowly away from the dog while in your sideways position ... don't ever stand face-to-face and don't ever turn your back completely! 4. Don't show your teeth at all and don't make any sudden movements.

In self defence yes
What is self defence?
It depends on the evidence
I do not think it would help if it is shewn that you pre-planned it

No. A dog dangerous enough to threaten the life of a human would probably be a candidate for putting down under the Dangerous Dogs legislation.
However, it was at one time anyway illegal in Albania, I was intrigued to learn. http://pinetreeweb.com/bp-varsity3-2.htm

No it's not, but you must be able to prove that you had a firm beleif that your safety was in immediate danger and there was no other effective course of action open to you.
You must report the incident to the police though, this will stop counter claims that you were cruel to the dog

Of course not. If you can kill a person in self defense, why wouldn't you be able to kill a dog?
You just have to prove that it was self defense.

No, but you may get more negative reaction from people then if you would have killed a person in self defense.

No. But I think you'd need evidence that it was trying to rip your throat out.
Shooting a dog "because it was running towards you" isn't self-defence.
