Depends a little on what it was, but I think you should first be given the opportunity to provide it to the public for a profit if you could.

Well, that depends. You should be able to make money off it if you want.

However, if you are a Republican, it's probably something that doesn't actually benefit the public good and instead causes injury and death.

No, you should be allowed to develop it and profit from it. The free market is the best way to achieve the public good.
