At my friends house they have wireless internet. They have a desktop and 2 laptops. The desktop and one laptop works and connects to the wireless internet with no problem but the other laptop stopped connecting to the wireless internet at their house this month. If we take that laptop anywhere else it connects with no problem. Any suggestions.

I had a similar problem and this is what I´va learned/understood.

Perform IPCONFIG or IPCONFIG /ALL on the computer with the problem. If you have an IP address 169.254.x.x it s very likely that the network card is working properly. The IP 169.254.x.x is assigned when the network adapter can not find a DHCP server.

It could be that DHCP is not enabled for your connection (not very likely).
It could be that DHCP has a small IP range and you have allocated all IPs on it (also not very likely, because you are assigned in most instances more than 20 computers that could be attached at a given moment.
That the MAC address of the network card is not in the possible range of recognized cards.

I checked the settings that I have for my connection by opening a browser page by going to the address returned by the IPCONFIG command listed as DEFAULT GATEWAY.

For my particular problem, I am using a modem/router of recent make/model (a 2wire 2701HG-T) that appeared to not be properly recognizing my network card (a RALINK wireless PCI card WgP/G with a RT61 chipset) and had to request help with my ISP to reset the WEP key for my modem/router.

In short, I would suggest to reset/change the WEP key with assistance of the ISP.

Hi,

Try renewing the IP address on the laptop, checking the firewall on the laptop and also checking the wireless router to see if there are any issues there with accepting the connection. I would also retry the password entered to access the router (that is if it has WPA or WEP running).

May want to disable firewall on the laptop whilst trying some of this.

If WPA or WEP (YUK) is enabled on the router, click on the WiFi Icon by the clock and choose the home network. When asked, type the passphrase in to connect.

If still stuck, call the router tech support line.

Delete the saved preferences for that network. ex. - remove it from the autoconnect list. That will promt you to input the key in again.
