I got back from overseas... and I was really Tan/Dark at the time. (i'm hispanic so take that into mind).
Well I got a job at a factory because I came home too late to register for college courses. every station i was put at people would talk to me like i did not speak english they would say, " PUT HERE, MOVE IT LIKE THIS...UNDERSTAND (they would say it loud and slow over and over again). I just looked at them as if they were joking... then one lady said, "man they hire these mexicans that don't even speak english what's the place coming too". I then said, "i speak english, i'm pursuing a degree in college"... they just melted and never talked to me again.

If I were you, I'd let those ignorant remarks roll right off my back. You're above that - don't waste your time trying to correct people's misconceptions.

Good for you, sick it to the igoramouses! I skydive and one of the best things about it is all the crazy and wild people you meet because you never know what these people do in their day jobs. For example; I was sitting around a campfire partying (as we do most nights at the drop zone), just gabbing away and as it turns out the guy I had been talking with is the head of Neuro-surgery (brain surgeon) at a top New England Hospital. I found it comforting that he was so down to earth and liked to jump out of planes on his few days off. And so the old saying ‘you should NEVER judge a book by its cover’ is dead on accurate.

Cuss them all out in Spanish but have a smile/concerned look on your face. Then laugh the rest of the day at the looks you got from them. LMAO just thinking about such a prank. Oh yeah. . . . .make sure you tell them that while their whitey asses were in air conditioned factories you were serving your country in the desert. When you go to work next week. . . . .wear a turban. Hee Hee.

Honestly what can you do. You are going to get some racist comments right now. But I am mexican-AMERICAN and see some people do not understand that there are mexican american people who live here and pre judge to early. I feel that people who make comments like this are just uneducated. They need to speak to them as if they understand english

I’d relax and go have a long nice swim in the ocean. Maybe you should be the one to talk first, so that they know you can speak English. It might help. And don’t feel offended, you know who you are and you know that you are an intelligent person, and just because of that, don’t feel bad.

Yeah people are real jerks. They make such hasty assumptions. I live in a neighborhood where there are a lot of non-english speaking European people, and sometimes people automatically suspect that I don't speak English because I look more European, then American.
