They could make it in 2-3 years if they're general manager is at all competant. They have several important pieces of a good team, including an up-and-coming starting rotation. Gorzelanny, Duke, Snell, and Maholm are all solid starters. LaRoche and Bay are good offensively, but they do need more offensive weapons including: a speedy leadoff man, another big bat to complement Bay, and a #2 hitter.

The Pirates aren't as far away as people think. Being in a division with 6 other teams (no matter how awful) isn't an asset, at least most years. Gorzelanny and Snell are young, exciting pitchers who anchor the staff. Adam LaRoche will come around, hard as it is to believe. Jack Wilson is doing a fine job and Jason Bay is a parennial All-Star. That being said, for the Pirates to truely be competitive, they need 2 more quality starters, another big average (not power) guy in the lineup, and a closer. My estimation? 2 years if they aren't afraid to spend a little.

2009 could be a possibility because:

1) LaRoche, Bay, Nady, and another free agent will have formed a pretty powerful lineup by then.

2) They have some great pitching prospects but they've all been injured for the most part. In AAA two of those prospects have ERAs under 2 and are almost ready to come up. The rotation is almost set. The bullpen is the problem. Outside of Capps, someone needs to step up.

3) The NL Central is pretty weak so they will only have to contend with maybe 2 teams a year in the division.

With Jaon Bay becoming such a great asset to the team, as well as Jose Bautista, Jose Castillo, Don Kelly, Adam LaRoche, and Freddy Sanchez, I think that all the Pirates have to do is develop a pitching game-only guy they have is Ian Snell. I'd say, with upcoming trades and future prospects-probably in 2014 (thats the year that Hideko Konjo is expected to come to the U.S. from Japan, and Pirates say they are interested.) He is a great pitcher! Hope this helped you out my pirates boy.

Well im not a Pirates fan, but i would love to see them go far in the playoffs. Its just that thier not willing to spend money, and thier pitching is really no good, exept for thier Ace Ian snell , but they cant rely on him only. So give them a few years and we will see what happens.

Management has to make a decision to be competitive. They play in a small market and seem to be watching their dollars which takes them out of the free agent market. Once the decision is made that they want to win they can begin the process of acquiring the kind of team they need to be winners. Until that decision is made by management you will continue to see them compete as they have for the past several years.

Probably not very soon, but who knows. Look at the Brewers. Things just have to come together. I am a Reds fan and they almost pulled off a playoff birth out of no where.

There is a slight chance, in the next 2 to 6 years, but only because we're in a weak division. Thankfully, I still remember '71 and '79.
How about them passing on the so-called franchise catcher in the draft because they couldn't afford him, pretty sad.

Well they have a superstar in Jason Bay, and a very solid ace in Ian Snell so to me it is just a matter of building more around that. they have some good players just not enough impact player. when a team is made up of role guys and nothing more you cant expect magic. that being said anyone remeber the 2003 marlins?
