A UPC code is made up of two sets of numbers. When you look at the UPC code there are 5 number a space and 5 more numbers. You will also see a small number before and after the main bar code (these are check digits).

The first 5 numbers are assigned by the Uniform Code Council. These number identify the manufacturer. Next time you are in the market look at different items from the same manufacturer, the first 5 numbers will always be the same.

The next 5 numbers are assigned by the manufacturer to identify their individual products. There is no central clearing house of this set of numbers.

You could try typing in the complete upc code into your search engine. Or determine the first 5 numbers to identify the manufacturer and contact them.

Barcodes are nothing more than a set of lines that translate to the number below the barcode itself. UPC barcode contain no other information.
