What really happened, it's kind of confusing. Some people say different things. It looks like he went back in time, but things were all mixed up because his mom and sister were on the plane that crashes, I don't know it's just confusing. I love that movie though.

Ok..i know the film is hard to understand at first..so you should watch the film again...with the director's commentary (kelly did a great one btw for this film) and then go to the offical web site...it has parts of the book..the philosophy of time travel. What happen is this...a engine fell out of the sky and almost killed Donnie..but this had no reason behind it. There was no cause for the effect...this made a rip in the universe...causing a tangent universe to be formed..this tangent universe is everything that heppen in the film after the engine falls....i could explain everything that happens in great detail...there is an answer..just read about it online..what ends up happening is that Donnie uses his "powers" to make the Engine come off the plane and go back in time...He makes a reason for the engine to fall in the first place...give the cause to the effect..but as such...he knows that in the end it will kill him....but what he does will save the universe.

First of all, his mom and his sister weren't on the plane, they were in the house with his dad when it happened. Second of all, it seemed to me like he was able to "transport" himself back in time to that point. It's almost like he knew that he was supposed to die or something, but he was also pretty messed up. Leaves you wondering if he was just insane or if he really saw all that. I love the movie, especially the evil bunny!

He went back in time and allowed himself to be killed by the engine. This way, the chain of events leading up to his girlfriend Gretchen being hit by a car will not happen. In effect, he sacrifices his life for hers.
When the engine hits his sister is just arriving home, and the mother is asleep.

It just made no sense at all...... by the way that movie blew dog! The only good part was in the theater and they showed Evil Dead on the screen. That made me think of a good movie.

It ends up that he died when the airplane engine fell through the roof over his bedroom. None of it actually happened.
