The best PLAYABLE character entirely depends on what you want to do. No one class can do everything well, ever class gives up something to be the best at something else. (The hybrids give up being the best at any one thing.) Below is a list of the character classes and what you can/should do with them. Pick a role you like and just play the class for a while to see if you like it.
Warriors = Tanks and decent damage dealers
Rouges = DPS they do small damage numbers constantly, it adds up fast
Hunter = Ranged expert with pets, rock both PvE and PvP Your pet acts like a tank in PVE and your ranged skills help in PVP
Priest = Healing, buffing, and some Shadow damage. Groups always want you.
Warlock = Magical hunters, with lots of damage over time spells
Mage = Do high damage at range
Paladin = Warrior/Priest hybrid, a little healing, a little buffing, and some tanking, many different support skills
Shaman = Warrior/Mage hybrid
Druid = True hybrid, can play as any class, but the true classes are better at their specialties than you are.
