I cant understand why you would have the smell of damp on your clothes. When clothes are washed, put out to dry then ironed and put away in the wardrobe or chest of drawers there should be no damp to create a smell.
In years past a fresher smell was given to clothes by placing little cloth bags of lavander, dried herbs or dried flower petals amongst clothes drawers or hanging from the rail in wardrobes

The smell of damp only happens when clothes aren't dried properly and start to mildew and rot. That's why rain on a wash day was dreaded - clothes had to be dried inside on clothes horses arranged around the fire and on the rising rack above the range.
Thank goodness for tumble driers!

They hung them on a washing line and let the air get to them.
it only needs few minutes. There is of course a risk of them being dive bombed by the local bird population , but if you are not by a tree it will probably not happen
