You should read the book after reading "The Vampire Lestat". Both are fanstastic novels, probably my favorite pieces of fiction.

In any case...

**SPOILERS**

Akasha and Enkil were queen and king of ancient egypt around 4000 b.c. Akasha was turned into the first vampire when the demon "Amel" entered her body through a wound and fused with her flesh. She then turned Enkil into a vampire and the two created the first brood of vampires.

Centuries later Akasha and Enkil seemingly lost the desire to live and entered a catatonic state and sat motionless, almost as statues for thousdands of years and became known as "those who must be kept" because if they were injured, all vampires are injured. If they die, all vampires die.

Eventually Akasha is awoken from her sleep by Lestat and this is where the main plot of Queen of the Damned takes off.

Eh? you haven't read the book? If you haven't this will be a spoiler. Akasha was an ancient Egyptian Queen who became the first vampire and was basically the mother of all vampires, hence the title "Queen of the Damned".
