in the Spanish dictionary : Contende : means to fight ,to compete, to argue, dispute

Just a guess. Contende is the French way of spelling contend which is to struggle against and so the whole phrase could mean ;To get out of a struggle'.

Just a clue or two - no full answer.

Contende is the Latin command form of verb contender - it has many traslations, depending on context - stretch, tune (like a guitar string), compete, dispute, and many more.

Ex is also Latin, a preoposition meaning 'out of, from'
