Dear bagel lover, (I love them too, with cream cheese, smoked salmon & capers), but to your question. I've suggested getting rid of "thumbs down" as it really serves no purpose--no one knows who did it or why, (although we can speculate when we know of a troll). I no longer even look at them, & never give thumbs down--seems mostly a way to "vent." What a waste of time. Of course people are mean, just ignore them. It's a silly, nonsense feature. Just forget it!

I agree with others, thumbs down can mean also an opinion, a lazy one by the way, because why not to write what you think instead of just clicking on a button? ;-)
Other times it is just plain ridiculous. Have you seen those questions like: "Where are you from?" and noticed all the thumbs down?? As if saying where you live deserves a criticism, really funny.
I believe that "thumbs down" should be just for nasty inappropriate answers, but hey, some have fun with it. I suppose it makes them feel important (rolling eyes)

If they are giving you a thumbs down, then it's only their opinion. Don't take it personal because it may not be the person that is asking the question. You have a lot of people on-line voicing their opinion. The good thing about Yahoo Answers is: you are privileged to give your answer and hope that it's the best, but that's not always the case.

Mean people = thumbs down? I think you have your set of opinions yourself. So nice people are the only ones who give thumbs up? What if a person says something demeaning? Can a nice person give the demeaning wording a thumbs down and still be considered a nice person because according to your philosophy, mean people give thumbs down.

Many opinions are fact based. Many depend on perspective. Others rely on structure of belief and mental state. In all of these there can be errors or distortions , so there are right and wrong opinions. Those opinions regarding taste or preference obviously are excluded from the category of right and wrong, since taste is not discutable.

Peoples perceptions and opinions are their realities. They believe them as much as any fact if not more so. Therefore the opinions one expresses are fact to them and unless they are extremely open minded they are bound to them. Dissenting opinions are viewed as incorrect and that is why they get the thumbs down.

Well, if you're entitled to your opinion they are too, as thumbs down is also an opinion.

some opinions are better than others.
some opinions represent thinking too small about big things.
some opinions belie deep ignorances
and some people present their opinions as being facts

Technically, when asking for opinions, you are conducting a survey or poll. As such they don't really belong in philosophy, but in the poll and survey category.
